Hypertension Care in Dallas, Texas

High blood pressure rarely announces itself. It builds quietly over years, and by the time symptoms appear it has often already affected the heart, kidneys, or blood vessels. Dr. James Race helps Dallas patients get their numbers under control — and keep them there — with accurate measurement, medication that fits your life, and follow-up that doesn't stop after the first prescription.

What Is Hypertension?

Hypertension is blood pressure that stays elevated over time, generally 130/80 mm Hg or higher on repeated readings. It usually causes no symptoms, which is why it is most often found during a routine visit. Care typically includes:

Blood Pressure Monitoring

Accurate in-office readings plus guidance on checking your pressure correctly at home.

Medication Management

Selecting and adjusting medication to reach your target with the fewest side effects.

Cardiovascular Risk Review

Assessing how blood pressure fits alongside cholesterol, weight and family history.

Lifestyle & Nutrition Support

Practical changes to sodium, activity, alcohol and sleep that move the numbers.

Lab Work & Organ Screening

Kidney function, glucose and lipid testing to catch complications early.

Ongoing Follow-Up

Scheduled recheck visits so treatment keeps working as your health changes.

Our Approach to Hypertension Care

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Before any treatment begins, we confirm that your readings reflect a true baseline. This may include:

  • Proper cuff size and seated rest before measuring
  • Repeat readings taken across more than one visit
  • Review of medications that can raise blood pressure
  • Guidance on checking your pressure at home

Building a Treatment Plan That Fits

Treatment is matched to your numbers, your other conditions, and how you respond over time. This may include:

  • Changes to sodium, activity, alcohol and sleep
  • Medication selection with side effects in mind
  • Dose adjustments based on follow-up readings
  • Coordination with chronic care management

Staying on Top of It Long Term

Blood pressure shifts with age, weight, stress and other medications, so your plan is reviewed regularly. This may include:

  • Scheduled recheck visits and routine lab work
  • Kidney, cholesterol and glucose monitoring
  • Refills managed without gaps in therapy
  • Referral to cardiology or nephrology when needed

Benefits of Hypertension Care

Consistent management does more than lower a number on a chart. It protects the organs that quiet, long-term pressure damages first.

Lower Heart Attack Risk

Reducing pressure eases the workload on your heart and the strain on artery walls.

Reduced Stroke Risk

Stable blood pressure is one of the strongest protections against stroke.

Kidney Protection

Controlled pressure slows the damage that leads to chronic kidney disease.

Preserved Vision

Protecting the small vessels in the eyes helps prevent pressure-related vision loss.

Better Daily Energy

Many patients report improved sleep, fewer headaches and steadier energy.

Fewer Surprises

Routine monitoring catches changes early, before they become emergencies.

What blood pressure reading is considered high?

A reading of 130/80 mm Hg or higher on repeated measurements is generally classified as hypertension. A single elevated reading does not confirm a diagnosis, which is why we take readings across more than one visit before starting treatment.

Will I need medication right away?

Not always. If your readings are mildly elevated and you have no other risk factors, we may start with lifestyle changes and recheck in a few weeks. Higher readings or added cardiovascular risk usually call for medication alongside those changes.

Do I need to check my blood pressure at home?

Home readings are helpful because they show how your pressure behaves outside the office. We will walk you through proper cuff size, positioning and timing so the numbers you bring in are reliable.

How often will I need follow-up visits?

While we are adjusting treatment, visits are typically every four to six weeks. Once your numbers are stable, most patients move to every three to six months with periodic lab work.

Can hypertension be reversed?

For some patients, sustained weight loss, reduced sodium and regular activity bring readings back into a normal range and medication can be reduced or stopped. For others, hypertension is a long-term condition that is managed rather than cured.

Do you accept insurance for these visits?

We accept most major insurance plans. Coverage for follow-up visits and lab work varies by plan, so contact our office and we will verify your benefits before your appointment.
