Wellness Exams in Dallas, TX

A yearly wellness exam is the appointment that catches what you can't feel yet. Dr. James Race provides thorough, unhurried preventive visits that track your health over time and address small concerns before they become large ones.

Wellness Exams at Our Practice

Most people only see a doctor when something is already wrong. A wellness exam flips that pattern. It's a scheduled, once-a-year check on how your body is actually doing — blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, screenings appropriate for your age, and a real conversation about anything that's been on your mind.

Dr. James Race takes the time to review your history, compare this year's numbers against previous visits, and explain what the results mean in plain language. Because the same physician sees you year after year, patterns that would be invisible in a one-off appointment become obvious — a blood pressure that has crept up, a lab value drifting in the wrong direction, a symptom you mentioned last spring that hasn't resolved.

Whether you're establishing care for the first time or returning for your annual visit, our team makes the process straightforward. Wellness exams are also the natural starting point for chronic care management if a condition does turn up.

What Is a Wellness Exam?

A wellness exam is a preventive appointment focused on your overall health rather than a specific complaint. It typically includes the following components:

Health History Review

An updated look at your personal and family medical history, current medications, allergies, and any changes since your last visit.

Physical Examination

A head-to-toe check including heart, lungs, abdomen, skin, and reflexes to identify anything that warrants closer attention.

Vital Signs & Measurements

Blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, height, weight, and BMI — tracked over time so trends are easy to spot.

Laboratory Testing

Bloodwork such as cholesterol panels, blood glucose, thyroid function, and complete blood count, ordered based on your age and risk factors.

Preventive Screenings

Age- and gender-appropriate screenings for conditions including cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease.

Personalized Guidance

A discussion of your results with practical recommendations on nutrition, activity, immunizations, and next steps.

Our Approach to Wellness Exams

Why Annual Wellness Exams Matter

High blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and early-stage diabetes rarely produce symptoms you would notice on your own. By the time they do, treatment is more complicated and outcomes are less predictable.

An annual exam catches these conditions while they are still easy to manage. It also builds a year-over-year record of your health, which makes it far simpler to tell the difference between a normal variation and a genuine change worth investigating.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Most wellness exams take about 45 minutes. You'll want to bring a list of your current medications and be ready to talk through any concerns, even minor ones. A typical visit includes:

  • Vital signs and body measurements
  • A full physical examination
  • Bloodwork and age-appropriate screenings
  • Review of immunizations and boosters
  • A follow-up plan and referrals if needed

Benefits of Preventive Care

Patients who keep up with annual exams tend to spend less on healthcare over their lifetime, not more. Catching a problem early almost always means fewer specialists, fewer procedures, and fewer medications long-term.

Beyond the clinical numbers, there's real value in having a physician who knows your history. When something does come up, you're not starting from scratch with a stranger — and if a chronic condition is identified, we can move directly into ongoing care management without delay.

We Answer Your Questions, So You Don't Have To Wonder

Still unsure whether it's time to book? Here are the questions patients ask most often about annual wellness exams.

Doctor answering a patient's questions about wellness exams in Dallas, TX

For most healthy adults, once a year is the standard recommendation. If you're managing a chronic condition, taking ongoing medication, or over 65, Dr. Race may suggest more frequent visits — typically every six months.

They overlap, but they aren't identical. A physical focuses on the hands-on examination itself. A wellness exam includes that physical, plus a broader review of your history, risk factors, screenings, immunizations, and a forward-looking prevention plan.

Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover one preventive wellness visit per year at no cost to you. Coverage for additional labs or screenings ordered during the visit can vary.

We recommend calling your insurer beforehand, or contacting our office — our staff can help verify your benefits.

Bring your insurance card, photo ID, a complete list of current medications and supplements with dosages, and records from any specialists you've seen recently. If you have a family history of a specific condition, jot it down — it directly affects which screenings we recommend.

If bloodwork is planned, you'll usually be asked to fast for 8 to 12 hours beforehand — water is fine. Our office will confirm this when you schedule, so you'll know before you arrive.

Dr. Race will walk you through the finding in plain language and explain what it does and doesn't mean. Depending on the result, next steps might be repeat testing, a lifestyle change, medication, or a specialist referral.

If it's an ongoing condition, we can transition you into chronic care management right away.

Plan for about 45 minutes. First-time patients establishing care should allow closer to an hour, since we'll be building your full history from the ground up.
